An Augmented Cybersecurity Behavioral Research Model
Abstract
Because the human aspect of cybersecurity remains less well understood, the problem of security design with unfriendly user interfaces persists. A major challenge to addressing the human component of cybersecurity is the lack of empirically identified factors influencing individuals' cybersecurity behaviour. In this paper, we propose an augmented behavioural research model that introduces "attitude to personal data" as a determinant of cybersecurity behaviour. As a research in-progress, a preliminary study conducted to examine the personal data element of the research model is briefly described. By expanding on existing behavioural theories, this research attempts to examine and predict the adoption of cybersecurity countermeasures from a new perspective. Results from this research are expected to guide the design of enhanced user models for adaptive cybersecurity.
